Kitchen Design Guide
While it is impossible to define the perfect kitchen for everyone, it is possible to lay down some rules that, if followed, will ensure a kitchen that will be functional, elegant as well as fun to work and eat in. You can make your own adjustments to these guidelines and get a final product more suited to your tastes.
Listed below are some thumb rules of kitchen design.
1. Streamline surfaces – Remember, always go for a smooth and seamless design. The lesser the number of visible joints and edges, the better it is.
2. Integrate appliances – Appliances are essential in a kitchen, but hiding them makes your kitchen look elegant as well as clutter free.
3. Get a smart splashback – The splashback is the best thing to use as a design focus in a kitchen. Choose from clear glass, mosaics and coloured and textured splashbacks.
4. Flaunt bench tops – Bench tops should be of a natural texture such as marble or matt granite. Stone composites, polished timber and poured concrete are also beautiful.
5. Opt for an island – An island bench is essentially for people to sit on. Install a comfortable one and you can place it in such a way that the cook faces family and friends.
6. Clue up on colour – Choose colours based on the space available. Light shades for small spaces, darker ones for large. Use colour splashes judiciously to feature spots.
7. Choose the right layout – Every kitchen layout should be designed around what is known as the ‘Golden Triangle’. This involves placing the main work areas - fridge, sink and oven/cook top - close to each other, positioned at three sides of a triangle. Regardless of kitchen size, these activity zones should be no more than three metres apart, so you can move easily between them.
8. Switch to clever lighting – Using the right type of light can help immensely in the design of the kitchen. Use over-bench lights for brighter work spaces and dimmers for relaxing.
9. Look, no handles – Keep the cupboard handles low-key. Either use finger pulls or go for no-fuss designs in matt chrome or stainless steel.
10. Maximise storage – Use drawers as they maximise the storage capacity of your kitchen. Extra-deep options are perfect for pots and pans. Shallow, extra-wide varieties are great for storing cutlery.
